Participating in Hamburg's Hydrogen Technology Expo

It was a privilege to participate in the Hydrogen Technology Expo, one of the world’s leading trade shows for hydrogen technology. This year’s expo set a new record for exhibitors, reflecting the rapid advancements in the hydrogen industry. The event underscored the growing global focus on green energy, with hydrogen solidifying its position as one of the most promising renewable energy sources of the future.

CellMo’s Innovative Metal Foam Solutions

At the expo, CellMo showcased a lineup of cutting-edge metal foam products designed to meet the hydrogen industry’s evolving needs. For PEM water electrolyzers (PEMWE), our titanium foam PTLs impressed visitors with their high surface area (25–50 μm pore size, 70–80% porosity) and exceptional flatness, enhancing catalyst efficiency while preventing membrane punctures—a common challenge in long-term operation. Our titanium PTL assemblies, featuring layered pore sizes for optimized gas transfer, were another highlight.

In AEM water electrolyzers (AEMWE), we presented our catalyst-coated nickel foam electrode, alongside our NiFe foam electrodes, which simplify manufacturing by integrating catalyst functionality directly into the foam. Our roll-to-roll technology enables scalable production of nickel foam, catering to growing industry demands.

Observing Trends in the Hydrogen Industry

The expo revealed several trends shaping the future of hydrogen technology. There was noticeable shift toward larger PEMWE modules, with many PTL suppliers introducing products tailored for these advanced systems. We observed a notable increase in foam PTL providers, with many suppliers incorporating foam layers on the membrane-facing side of their PTLs. This trend underscores the growing recognition of metal foam’s advantages within PEMWE modules, validating its role in enhancing performance and reliability.

We also observed rapid progress in the development of AEMWE technology, particularly in Europe. There was strong interest in AEMWE solutions at our booth, where visitors sought PTL options for this emerging market. Notably, we are the only supplier offering NiFe foam PTLs, a unique solution that simplifies manufacturing while meeting the specific demands of AEMWE systems. These trends reflect an exciting trajectory for both PEMWE and AEMWE technologies, signaling continued innovation and expansion.

This expo allowed us to connect with leading global companies and reaffirmed the immense potential of metal foam technologies in the hydrogen industry. Our expertise in:

Creating high-porosity foams with tailored pore sizes
