Key Insights from H2 & FC EXPO Tokyo 2025

At this year’s H2 & FC EXPO, one thing was clear—Japan is doubling down on hydrogen technology.
Honda & Toyota’s unveiled their next-generation FCEVs, drawing attention from across the industry. This strong commitment to fuel cell advancement was also reflected at our booth, where we saw a surge in interest for metallic gas diffusion layers (GDLs). While carbon paper still dominates the GDL market, more manufacturers are now exploring metallic GDLs to take fuel cell performance to the next level.
Last year at our booth, CellMo’s Ti porous transport layers (PTLs) for PEM electrolysers attracted significant attention, and this year, interest has only grown. Our latest platinum-coated PTL assembly (PTE) sparked in-depth discussions on how advanced PTL designs can drive next-generation electrolyser performance. Meanwhile, PTLs for AEM electrolysers, which had little visibility last year, became a major topic of inquiry, reflecting a clear shift in industry focus.
Some noticeable trends were the increased presence of component suppliers at the expo, the number of major brands conducting market research, and the sourcing of hydrogen-related components. Many companies are actively expanding their hydrogen supply chains, and the enactment of Japan’s Hydrogen Society Promotion Act last year appears to be driving real momentum, accelerating both technological development and investment in hydrogen infrastructure.
We’re excited to be part of this transformation, collaborating with fuel cell and electrolyser manufacturers to push the boundaries of hydrogen technology. Looking forward to what’s next!
